Frequently asked questions from travellers
Best season to explore Veloscenic route by bike?
The route is open all year round. From a weather perspective, we recommend planning your trip between April and October. Spring and autumn are especially pleasant seasons, with vibrant colors and greater availability of unique or offbeat accommodations.
How to plan your cycling trip?
- Take the time to choose the places you’d like to stop, by exploring the must-see sites along the route or drawing inspiration from other travelers’ stories.
- Then, plan your stages using the route planner and based on the average daily pace (see the question “How many kilometers can you ride per day?”).
- You can then search for accommodations directly on the website (see the question “Where can you stay along the Véloscénie?”).
What type of bike should I use on the Véloscénie?
We recommend choosing a hybrid bike or a gravel bike, both well suited for the mix of paved sections and greenways along the route.
Avoid performance road bikes, which are more fragile and more likely to suffer punctures. If needed, you can adapt a road bike by fitting it with 25 mm puncture-resistant tires.

How many days does it take to ride the Veloscenic route?
When planning your trip along the Véloscénie, it’s important to ride at your own pace to avoid stress or frustration. Depending on your profile and your bike setup, here are a few guidelines:
- Family with children: 30–40 km per day
- Balanced experience (cycling + sightseeing): 50–60 km per day
- With an e-bike: around 70 km per day
- Sporty challenge: 80–100 km per day (or more if you’ve got strong legs! 😉)
On average, we recommend riding the full Véloscénie in about 10 days, covering roughly 50 km per day including small detours.
Of course, this depends on your available time, your daily rhythm, and who you're traveling with.
Team slow and steady or team turbo legs — it’s up to you!
How to reach the Véloscénie by train?
The Véloscénie crosses five major railway lines, giving you access to around twenty train stations located along the route or reachable via bike-friendly connections.
Can trailers and handbikes pass greenway barriers?
The greenways are now designed to allow access for trailers, tandems, and handbikes.
Only a few spots may pose a challenge, and we've listed them on this map.
