Acquired by Empress Joséphine in 1810, after the accidental drowning of its previous owner, the Domaine de Bois-Préau was primarily intended to extend her property towards the village of Rueil.

The Empress would house several people in her service there, including her doctor and her steward. She would also use the Château to house books that could not find their place at Malmaison, and would also house part of her cabinet of curiosities there.

After Joséphine's death, the Château de Bois-Préau was passed to her son, Eugène de Beauharnais, and was resold by his widow when he died in 1824.

The Château then had various owners until, in 1920, the couple Edward Tuck and Julia Stell decided to acquire it, and decided in 1926 to offer it to the National Museums in 1926 in order to make it an annex of the Malmaison museum.

On October 9, 2022, after 25 years of closure and one year of work, the Château de Bois-Préau reopens to the public to present temporary exhibitions. The inaugural exhibition will be about Prince Eugène de Beauharnais.
