Tips before you set off
- Book ahead, especially in July and August and over long weekends. These stays are often limited in number and fill up fast. A few clicks before you leave means one less thing to worry about on the road.
- Pack a sleeping bag. Some places provide bedding and towels, others don't. A compact sleeping bag is every cycle tourist's reliable travel companion, and it means no surprises when you check in.
- Check opening dates before planning your stage. Most of these places are open from April to October. Outside that window, plan ahead and book a standard hotel or B&B instead.
- Let the host know your arrival time. Owners of these small setups aren't always on site all day, so a quick message the evening before or that morning avoids any hassle.
- Check what's available to eat nearby. Some campsites have a snack bar or small shop, others are out in the countryside. It's worth carrying a backup meal, like pasta or tinned food, just in case.
